A yearly flu jab to lower your chance of catching flu, free on the NHS if you are eligible or privately for a fee
Flu is a virus that spreads easily in the colder months. For most people it means a week or two feeling unwell, but for some it can lead to serious illness. A yearly flu vaccination helps your body recognise and fight the strains expected this season. At Vale of Neath Pharmacy, the vaccination is free on the NHS if you are eligible, or available privately for a small fee.
Why have the flu vaccine
- It lowers your chance of catching flu, and can make it milder if you do.
- It helps protect people around you, including babies and anyone frail or unwell.
- Flu changes each year, so last year's vaccination will not cover this season.
Who can have it on the NHS in Wales
- Anyone aged 65 and over on or before 31 March of the relevant season.
- People aged 6 months to 64 years in a clinical risk group, such as long-term chest, heart, kidney, liver or neurological conditions, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.
- Pregnant women.
- Children aged 2 and 3, and school children from reception to year 11.
- Care home residents, and some social and domiciliary care staff.
- Carers.
- Poultry, cattle and swine workers at higher risk of exposure to animal flu.
What happens
We will ask a few short questions about your health, then give the vaccination into your upper arm. It takes only a few minutes.
